"We have one goal and one goal only - raise enough money to shove this in England's stuck-up face," Meyers said as he opened proceedings. "Oh and also to raise money for kids in need."

Among the line-up was a musical parody with Coldplay, a duet between Ed Sheeran and Kermit the Frog, as well as the end of Nick Cannon's 24-hour danceathon.

Meyers also took part in a sketch where he contacted Chris Pine to help out with the event, who then extends the offer to his Into the Woods co-star Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, Zac Efron, Neil Patrick Harris, Sean 'Diddy' Combs, Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc and Jennifer Garner.

Several other stars attended the event to raise donations, including Julianne Moore, U2, Gwyneth Paltrow, Stephen Merchant, Rose Byrne, Olivia Wilde, Kyle MacLachlan and many more.

There were also segments filmed in poverty-stricken regions with Jack Black, who was brought to tears during a visit to Uganda where he saw a struggling hospital and a young boy living on the streets.

Michelle Rodriguez went to Peru where she was horrified to discover young children working in difficult conditions.

Bill Gates and his wife Melinda both appeared in a recording of their own and pledged an extra $4 million of donations too.

British stars Sir Ian McKellen, Dame Helen Mirren, Simon Cowell, Naomi Campbell, Eddie Redmayne, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sienna Miller and Robert Pattinson also gave a helping hand behind-the-scenes.
