He added that the timing was great, because he was distracted by thoughts of promoting his new film, Avengers: Age of Ultron.
"I was really just more reflective and grateful," Downey Jr continued. "I got to be around all my loved ones, friends and co-workers."
Downey has long-term plans with Marvel, including reprising his role as Iron Man beyond Avengers: Age of Ultron in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, which will also introduce Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther.
Avengers: Age of Ultron is released in the UK on April 23, and in the US on May 1.
