Emmerich was also joined on stage by returning cast members including Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Brent Spiner and Judd Hirsch, as well as newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward.
Set 20 years after the events of the last film, the world of Independence Day: Resurgence now has a global defence system to protect the planet from future alien invasions. However, the aliens are one step ahead with an advanced and unprecedented force.
"We call it in the film the War of '96," Emmerich explained. "It's like a post-World generation that's unified, and that's amazing to see a world come together with a common enemy. That's a resurgence."
Goldblum said that his character, scientist David Levinson, is leading a new initiative to safeguard the planet.
"Having faced that last challenge, we're all working in a beautiful way under one [goal]," he revealed.
Meanwhile, Hemsworth spoke about the back story of his character, saying: "Jake lost his parents in the first attack, he grew up in an orphanage, and eventually joined the military and became a fighter pilot, and eventually became one of the best of the best fighter pilots.
"I think his ego kind of got in the way, he made a bad decision and put someone's life at risk, and he got the great job of driving this moon tug, which is basically a forklift on the moon."
Independence Day: Resurgence will arrive in cinemas on June 24, 2016 to mark the 20th anniversary of the original movie.
