The actor used the photo, which has since been deleted, in a post condemning a controversial vaccination bill in California that makes vaccinations mandatory for nearly all school children in the state.
A screenshot of the original tweet was shared by the boy's aunt on Instagram, who criticised the comedian for using the boy's image out of context and with no prior knowledge of his condition.
Carrey later apologised for the post after the boy's mother asked the actor to remove the tweet, writing: "I'd like to apologise to the Echols family and others for posting a pic of their kids w/o permission.
"I didn't mean to cause them distress."
